Car Dealer Pays Family $270,000

A jury says a Colorado Springs car lot owner and a relative must pay $270,000 to the family of a man who was shot and killed while allegedly breaking into the business. After a two-week civil trial, the jury concluded Friday the men weren't shielded by self-defense laws. Police have said the intruder wasn't a threat to the men despite having knives in his pocket and strapped to his ankle. A grand jury declined to indict the business owner or two of his relatives.

The owner and relatives were guarding the car lot after a string of robberies. That night 2 guys scaled a fence to get inside the lot and one was shot and Killed. The other Guy testified they had smoked methamphetamine and were looking to steal anything to buy more drugs, when two armed men stormed out of building and started running after them, he scrambled over a car and jumped a fence. The other was hiding in a shed when a .45-caliber rifle bullet was fired passed through the shed’s door and pierced his heart.

The jury award includes loss of companionship and loss of future earnings. The family will also be awarded some legal costs.
