Fake Air Bags

Some repair shops and used car lots are putting fake air bags inside cars. A car involved in a crash that killed an 19-year-old man showed the air bags in the car the man was riding in did not deploy. An investigation found the auto repair shop where the car was purchased stuffed the steering wheel with newspaper instead of a new airbag. A woman was badly injured and her mother killed after a collision in which the passenger airbag was simply stuffed back in and taped shut and the driver’s side airbag was completely missing. A student in Tuscon died in a crash after her previously deployed airbag was simply cut out and a piece of wood inserted.
According to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the most common reason for a malfunctioning airbag was that the airbag was missing or never replaced after a previous crash.
A recent report by National Public Radio (NPR) showed some dealers and repair shops even stuffed airbag compartments with aluminum cans, shoe leather, packaging materials, and paper.
